What my exim 4.10 does - which looks default - is

frodo:~% sendmail -bv -v idiots@???
LOG: MAIN
lowest numbered MX record points to local host: myvzw.com (while
routing <idiots@???>)
idiots@??? cannot be resolved at this time:
lowest numbered MX record points to local host

require verify        = sender


does the trick, I guess.

In exim 3.x it is sender_verify
