I did get it done before my working day has ended (just). The patch is
quite large, so instead of posting it here, I have put it at

http://cus.cam.ac.uk/~ph10/acl_file

This patch is in my development tree, which will be made available as a
snapshot very shortly (maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day).
