Oh, me too. I was merely trying to say that if somebody did want to keep
commented files and move them into place with comments stripped, you
don't need to learn m4; awk/sed/perl will do the job.

Indeed, but in a controlled enviroment, where you probably also want to
run CVS or SCCS (to keep a handle on the changes), the standard way of
doing this is to write a single script that does everything for you:
check out
edit
test (if there's a way of testing for syntax etc)
check in
install - this is where you'd strip comments
However, I've noted the comment requirement on the Wish List.
