as the cram authenticator uses that algo, i think it would worth the
little extra work to merge the hmac expansion and the cram snippet, i
mean merging the funcs they use to compute the relevant stuff.

that would probably ease the extension of the cram authenticator,
if/when new algos got accepted/standardized there as well.
