with all due respect, if the maintainer of the debian package is MIA, most
of these advantages are history (or soon will be.)

i don't think anyone is telling you to build your whole system from
scratch. the problem with waiting for exim 4 from debian is that it may
take a while, and in the meantime you're missing out on all the nice
features that exim 4 has and exim 3 lacks.

besides which, compiling and installing exim has never been particularly
difficult. the most trouble i've had has been with minor quirks of various
linux distributions, usually easily handled with a modest amount of
research, usually involving header files or newer Berkeley DB versions.
