That's what I hate so intensely about software that is prepared by
people who think they know better than the authors, and that's why I
avoid rpms as much as possible for all specialist/Internet software.

You'd have to change /etc/passwd too. A much better solution is to find
the Exim config file and make sure (enter it as new if necessary) that
exim_user = exim and exim_group = mail in the *main* section.

Someone probably compiled the exim binary with a UID od 1001 and GID of
1001 and the promptly forgot about passwd and group..
