It does simplify the configuration, unfortunately, somewhat at the expense
of making it significantly more verbose, as I discovered at the weekend.

| [mbm@colon]:~/exim4$ cat configure-4-new | grep -v '^#'  | grep -v '^ *$' \
| > | wc -l
|      354


| [mbm@colon]:~/exim4$ cat /etc/exim/configure  | grep -v '^#'  | \
| > grep -v '^ *$' | wc -l
|      235


But, oh well, it did give me a chance to sort out some of the niggling bugs
of my current configuration :-)

All in all, though, I'm happy.

The default config file or convert4r4 is a very good starting point, though
you'll almost certainly want to review the file by hand.
