It depends on what sort of SMTP AUTH. All are covered in the spec.txt,
delivered with the Exim 4 tar bundle.

I use AUTH PLAIN; in as much as my MUAs (Evolution 1.0.8, Mozilla 1.1b)
support it, if possible (Mozilla but not Evolution) I do STARTTLS first,
so all traffic is encrypted before the AUTH. But Exim supports 2 other
AUTH methods besides PLAIN. And Sendmail has others, that Exim doesn't
have.

So what kind of AUTH does your provider insist on?
