Energis squared runs the freeserve service, as well as a number of
others. They (freeserve) release audited user figures every so often,
but to my knowledge the figures approximate 3 million users, each user
consisting of at least one subdomain. The current incoming mail servers
announce themselves as exim 3.35, and there are 2 IPs visible.

The original design of that system was to be fault tolerant, so SQL
lookups were avoided (otherwise everything dependant on the database
server being always available, and your scalability is directly related
to the database) - instead changes are propagated into local databases
as they happen.

There are a number of outgoing mail systems - no idea what the numbers
are now, but considerably more than there are incoming because the real
work is holding the outgoing queues and retrying all the stuff to AOL
that clogs the queue.
