I have a linux server ( RH 7.3 ) with many virtual hosts on it. I'm
running exim 3.35. One of my clients (domain.com) chooses to use their
own mail server to deliver there email, therefore I forward their MX
record to there mail server. This mail server is a win2k machine running
exchange. This machine has no fully qualified domain name, only a
static IP address.
My problem is that for their MX record I have their static IP address,
however any mail sent from an account on the linux server does not get
sent to the win2k exchange server. However external emails (emails from
sources other then accounts on the linux server) get delivered without a
problem. I have sent email to the win2k server from hotmail.com without
issue.
When I send email from the linux server I get a "Mail delivery failed:
returning message to sender" back from the linux server. The error is
such..

xxxxxxx@???
all relevant MX records point to non-existent hosts:
it appears that the DNS operator for this domain has installed an
invalid MX record with an IP address instead of a domain name on the
right hand side

This is true, their MX record is an IP address, however mail from
external sources works. What could be making this happen? If I cannot
use the IP of the win2k server then how do I forward their MX record?

Thank you in advance for any response.
