Aha! That is a bug which I've recently fixed. This is from the ChangeLog
from the as yet unreleased 4.11:
7. The value of $0 in the replacement in a rewriting rule was being
corrupted, leading to incorrect results or error diagnostics.
The workaround is to use $local_part@$domain instead, of course.
