So where is this documented? I could assume data means during any data
transfer -- so timeout could be at any time (like at HELO).
(Anyways, the author already clarified this in this thread a couple days
ago.)

Your email came to me a few days after Philip's email. The author said
Exim has assigned a message ID at this stage.

I couldn't find that documented. (And as I noted in the earlier email, I
couldn't my log message documented either.)
