Actually - if you have decent memory, running ramfs works pretty well
(though of course you lose the possibility of spool crash-recovery).
Using solid-state disks on first-tier mx's seems like a waste of money.

Even with trying to reduce the amount of time that mail spends on your
primary relay, under heavy load even a 60 second average residency time
can make for a large amount of spooled mail at any given time.
Protecting that seems worthwhile to me.
