I had this trouble with all but one sun.com servers but don't any more.

I'm running exim 4.10 on Red Hat Linux, kernel.org 2.4.18 kernel with
iptables.

With the help of a Linux colleagure in Portugal, the fault was traced to
ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) being set to "on" in my kernel.
ECN uses TCP flags originally assigned to TOS - it's a "new invention.

'/bin/echo "0" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn' cured the Sun mail server
problem, and at the same time cured connection with a lot of web sites
that my machine couldn't reach from Linux Mozilla and Netscape browsers,
although the same machine could reach them from Windows ME Netsca    pe
browsers.

Sun's mail servers are (mostly, as far as i could find out?) Solaris 7&8
machines, but some of the web servers were MS IIS machines, leading to
the conclusion that routers between my ISP and them were also confused
by ECN.

I don't think this can be an Exim problem, since for me it's now
completely vanished. Sun wasn't the only ECN-afflicted mail domain, by
the way; Hotmail was another.

Best,

Tony

The usefulness of RTFM is vastly overrated.
