What happens when you fire up Exim with the debug switch set to "copious
killer amounts" as in -d 9?

This will show you exactly what's going on, and if you have a packet
sniffer that might help to watch what's transpiring between the MTA and
the client.

With that, do you have everything else in your configure file for
relaying? Specifically, you've set up
Authentication methods for plaintext?
