ADd a user/group setting to the transport.
user = exim
group = exim
(or whatever your settings are)

Exim, has write permissions to that directory:

drwxr-x---   2 exim     exim        4096 Jul 17 15:01
/var/spool/exim_outgoing/input/

And it does spool lots of mail through it - Just not when created by
autoreply :-/
