I have /var/spool/mail/<user> in maildir format. You can put the
mail folders any where you want, and in any format that you want (as
long as exim supports it ;-)). The directory name "Maildir" is only
meaningful if you use qmail (who knows why djb couldn't just use
~/Mail like everyone else) or courier-imap.
