Why not use a mail client that talks smtp on port 25, or set the user she is
sending mail as a trusted user, so that she can invoke sendmail -f from her
mail client?

By default, most distros are configured to display the mailbox
status on login. To disable this feature (eg. for a standalone
box) edit /etc/login.defs and change MAIL_CHECK_ENAB to "no".
