Er, if you look at the cover of the book, in the top righthand corner,
there is a diagonal "flash" that reads "Official Guide For Release 3".
Then if you read chapter 1, on page 3 you will find the following
statement:
Exim is still being developed in the light of experience, changing
requirements, and feedback from users. This book was originally written
to correspond to release 3.16, but while it was being revised,
additional facilities such as support for LMTP and SSL/TLS were added to
Exim for the 3.20 release. Some references to these important new
features have therefore been included in the book, which now covers all
the major features of the 3.2x releases. No further functional
enhancements to Exim 3 are planned, though in due course a new major
release (Exim 4) is expected.

I am sorry that you didn't notice. It is/was unfortunate that release 4
came so soon after the publication of the book, but you can't hold up
software development in order to keep the book in date. I insisted on
having the mention of "Release 3" on the cover to try to make it obvious
to people what was going on, and that's why that paragraph was included
in the Introduction. I don't think I could have done much more.
I am working as fast as I can on a revised edition for Exim 4, but it is
unlikely to be published before the end of the year.
I hope you have a better experience with the software than you have had
with the book. A lot of the background stuff in the book is still
relevant, but the details of router configuration and access control are
substantially changed.
