My recommendation is for a community-developed set of patterns to use
in a system filter or external (perl/python/whatever) program. This
solution doesn't require spending cash and is effective for the most
common stuff. When you see a new email-born worm you can visually
inspect it for telltale patterns and add them to your filtering. If
you want a real virus scanner to catch all known Windows virii before
your unsuspecting LookOut users shoot themself in the foot, then
ignore my advice :-). You may still want to consider my advice for
the time in between a new worm being released (and arriving at your
server) and an update from your supplier.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke
is easy and my burden is light.
