I have to thank Steve Romero for offering some help, but we didn't really
get anywhere.
I really loathe to do that, but I ended up hardcoding each domain:
(in case you're curious, I need to override DNS between two internal hosts
because they can't reach one another's outside interface in DNS, and for
some reason I don't know (not my department), I can't have split horizon DNS)

# Doesn't work :-(
#sflist1:
# driver = domainlist
# transport = remote_smtp
# route_list = lists.sourceforge.net:lists.sf.net:users.sourceforge.net:users.sf.net:sourceforge.net:sf.net sf-list1 byname

lists_sourceforge_net:
driver = domainlist
transport = remote_smtp
route_list = lists.sourceforge.net sf-list1 byname

lists_sf_net:
driver = domainlist
transport = remote_smtp
route_list = lists.sf.net sf-list1 byname

users_sourceforge_net:
driver = domainlist
transport = remote_smtp
route_list = users.sourceforge.net sf-list1 byname

users_sf_net:
driver = domainlist
transport = remote_smtp
route_list = users.sf.net sf-list1 byname

sourceforge_net:
driver = domainlist
transport = remote_smtp
route_list = sourceforge.net sf-list1 byname

sf_net:
driver = domainlist
transport = remote_smtp
route_list = sf.net sf-list1 byname
