Found it - the browser was a windows client and were adding ^M's to the
ends of lines.
When I had "created" the file using vi I hadn't realised that a file
already existed so what I did was edit a file with a single ^M in it,
hence why it seemed the problem was happening in that case as well.
Using the -b switch on vi did the trick.
