one thing to add to phil's answer:
be aware of the fact that 3.12 is very old. it's still adequate to
learn exim and use it for (not-so) simple stuff, but if you're facing
any problems you really don't know why that happens (string expansion
weirdnesses come to mind), upgrade. at least skim through the
changelog, no matter what - lots of mysteries are fixed there.
