No, that's not right the right track. Exim has in fact been started:

> > daemon started: pid=5289, -q30m, listening for SMTP on port 25


He can't find his spool directory (and incidentally whatever is beneath
it).

An unmodifies exim compile gives the default /usr/exim/spool and the
logs in ./log . Local/Makefile can be used to change things.

Mind you, the same compile would give the default exim bin as
/usr/exim/bin/exim .
