Phillip,

Could you please tell me why you won't put it in the next point release
of 3.3x, if that ever happens.

It's a pretty basic patch, only a couple of minor tweaks, and then
everything works. There are virtually no changes at all to the logic of
the normal server, the tweaks only take effect when the command line
switch is turned on (they are controlled via a global boolean flag that
only takes effect when TLS support is compiled in), and apart from the
encryption startup 'exim -bssmtp' is exactly the same as 'exim -bs'.
This patch uses the principle of minumum change and minimum effect, and
will make a lot of TLS/SSL users with older MTAs deployed pretty happy.
It is a case of a lot of gain for almost no change, and none of that
change is critical.

Is there any point in putting the patch in a contrib section for 3.3x,
and mentioning it somewhere? What do those on the list say? Or is there
far more that you can see that needs doing even just for smpts service
via inetd? As you say on the WWW site., 4.0x is early in the release
cycle, and you point every one at 3.3x for dependibilty reasons.

Thank you for exim. I believe that you are doing a great job on it. I
am actively using it for UUCP. In the next few months I will be
deploying some new UUCP work that uses md5 checksummming in the i and j
protocols because of very bad phone noise (3rd world Aid Agency work) -
bit flips cancelling each other out wrt. the CRC and causing message
mayhem. I am planning to use exim 3.3x for the projects. I am finding
postfix is a bit of a glue-together with lots of mostly fitting parts,
and it shows when you whant to do volume accounting based on log
messages etc...

Best Regards,

Matthew Grant

I'll certainly take a look at the code for 4.xx, but I'm hoping not to
make any more changes to 3.3x if I can help it.
