If you want a more detailed report see
http://gcc.gnu.org. Almost a
year and a half ago, when RH began the whole fiasco, there was a
prominent link on the front page to an explanation of what RH did. In
short, gcc 2.96 doesn't exist. See
http://gcc.gnu.org/releases.html
for a list of actual releases. If I find that explanation page
quickly I'll post the link.
