Thanks for putting me on the right track... ;-)
I had left the default (LDAP_LIB_TYPE=OPENLDAP1) when RedHat 7.2 wants
LDAP_LIB_TYPE=OPENLDAP2.
In addition the library seems to be split between /lib and /usr/lib so
once I got that sorted out it built fine.
