As I said in the private message, I believe that Exim can be configured to
do PLAIN both ways. I don't think it needs a patch to the code, just a
suitable configuration. I will test this out next week; if the code does
need fixing, I'll fix it for 4.02. Eventually this will trickle into the
documentation.
