Nothing should need installing. Your problem almost certainly lies in
libc.

Exim simply uses the system crypt() call. If that happens to have been
overloaded to handle other algorithms, then so be it. Exim doesn't
interfere, or place other restrictions upon the data format, or
anything.

If the user's password isn't being correctly matched, look at the system
authentication routines in libc.
