I've just noticed another problem with SMTP rewrite. The pattern is NOT
expanded (unlike other rewriting rules). Consequently, your \N won't do
what you expect.
I have a choice of (a) documenting that SMTP rewriting rules are
different or (b) forcing an expansion.
(a) Makes things easy once you understand - these rules always have to
be regex anyway, so expansion probably doesn't achieve anything.
(b) Makes things uniform, which has its advantages.
