The original Sendmail was written to solve a mail problem that doesn't
generally exist these days. It was designed to work so that it could be
configured to act as an MTA for multiple different networks each with
different mail systems/standards; including being flexible enough to
cope with new mail systems. Specifically *not* just "Internet mail".

It was written to replace something previously in use at Berkeley that
was not flexible enough. The fact that a sendmail.cf file is somewhat
too flexible for today's MTA's is understandable given Sendmail's
origins.

Nothing except to help people appreciate Exim better :)
