You do have to run an MTA on a workstation, if only because there
are automatic e-mail messages sent from cron, and in some other
situations, using /usr/bin/mail, which doesn't speak SMTP. Maybe
we should publish a collection of Exim configuration files for
home workstations and "dumb hosts" which only redirect mail to a
smarthost? I have some examples.
