Mutt calls sendmail on localhost directly (typically sendmail -oi -oem -f),
like elm does. Pine can talk smtp to an external server if specified
explicitly, if not, it calls sendmail -bs locally.

As long as the workstation is behind a firewall / over NAT or elsewhere, it
does help to have an MTA running, or at least a mail submitting agent like
Masqmail / Nullmailer.
