This is what happens with exim -bh:

AUTH PLAIN base64stuff

535 Incorrect authentication data

$1 is empty, that doesn't look quite right.

Apparently this is what's happening evolution as, I ran a sniffer and saw
that it was doing the exact same thing..

Need anymore data?
