The idea, as stated, is to run Amavis or Exiscan on the virus scanning
machines.

The reason why we don't want to install it on the hubs is three fold.

1) the machines are production machines handling hundreds of thousands
of emails a day. Taking them down for the time it takes to install and
throughly test the virus scanning is not practical.

2) if we did the above and a problem happened after the testing then
we'd have to whip the machine out of service which would cause problems
(round robin DNS entry would have to be changed and take ages to
propogate causing lost connections). Changing an exim config not to
point to the virus scanning machine would be much quicker.

3) the hubs were designed and built to pass mail through them as fast
as possible. They couldn't handle the load of scanning hundred of
thousands of mails a day. Rebuilding them would takes us back to 1)
Thus my idea was to allow the hubs to continue doing their job and
add virus scanning machines which plenty of memory and processor capacity
(plus the IO) to handle the scanning but not have to worry about the
alias expansions, virtual domains etc.

If anyone can suggest a better way I'm open to suggestions.

Oh, also does anyone have any comparative comments about Sophos and McAfee
virus scanners for doing this sort of work?

Thanks

Mike
