Way back in 1999 there was a series of conversations that went
something like:
A: Where/what is the configuration sample Cxyz mentioned in the FAQ?
B: Look in the FAQ (it's in a compressed tarball on an FTP site)
A: Ah ha, thanks, but it's a pity it's not a link, perhaps even just
to that explanatory paragraph!
B: That (the former idea) would be hard because it's a tarball.
In 2001 it appears to be the same situation. Not only that, the FAQ is
now weighing in at 380KB of HTML. The downside of this is it's a pain to
download over a slow link, taxes some browser's rendering capabilities
but most frustrating (IMO, and I think this is the cause) is it has
never for me usefully appeared in google, even though the FAQ, C, & F
stuff -- when I've gone through the rigmarole of obtaining and opening
it -- has provided enough for me to solve my problems.
Can I propose,
* splitting the FAQ into separate pages for each section (there are
plenty of open source tools to help manage files & FAQ websites)
* putting the config samples online.
I am more than happy to help to the extent of doing all the grunt work,
including writing any scripts necessary to perform any conversion/
house-keeping.
Cheers,
Paul
