I am wondering if an LDAP Directory would contain any passwords to facilitate AUTH.
I've heard of SMTP-AUTH if authentication is what you're talking about. I'm also certain
there are hundreds (possibly thousands) who run Exim with LDAP.
Have you by any chance checked a document called spec.txt? It may also be possible to get
some info at
http://www.exim.org
