What ever the case, make sure that your local mailboxes have their root owned by
whichever user exim is running under.
For example:
I run exim as exim and so I did:
chmod exim:exim /etc/virtual
Giving exim ownership of the spool directory for all virtual domains. check your
configure file to determine the spool directory. For you, change exim to mail.!
