Not an NFS protocol issue, no: even NFS v2 uses 32-bit fields for uids & gids.
This doesn't mean that all NFS server and client implementations are bug-free
in this area, though... For example, I recall a bug in a server implementation
that treated all client uids divisible by 65536 as having root privilege!
