The default configuration doesn't deliver all remote mail via a smarthost.
The configuration you were describing by "Doesn't work" had been modified
by yourself - how the hell are we supposed to know what you did exactly?
The smarthost configuration I offered seems trivial to me. As for
postfix/qmail/sendmail/whatever - use them if you prefer them - I'm not
quite sure why you'd think we'd be upset to learn that Exim is different
from other packages in numerous ways.
