all this with -d9 ? brarhm... try to trace it ? (dunno how's truss
called on freebsd:), or, hm, try to redirect both stdout and stderr to
a file and open that with an editor that actually shows you the
nonprintable charactes, to see if anything is going on that way ?
i'm rushing into the wild here i know..
