The problem is that exim is not
running as root when it tries to
verify the passwords. PAM can
obviously see the shadow data if it
is running as root, and there is a
helper application which makes it
work if the calling app is running
as the uid of the user whose
password you are checking. Neither
of these cases applies in the case
of exim, which makes things more
difficult.

Finding a better way of doing this
would be good.
