Presumably the child knows why it returned 1 though..? and might be
able to relay that information to the parent somehow? I'm not too
hot on IPC though.

I just did a grep though all the mail logs on all our servers for
anything resembling the error message in question, and this was
the only case that turned up. So, whatever it was, it was obviously
quite a rare combination of events that caused it...
