Okay, I got confused by the term "item", thinking an exclamation mark
must exist in front of each item in the MySQL database, which I
obviously can't do.

Thanks for the clarification. Sadly, this is the least of my worries.
This will become useful once I've figured out a solution for my problem
described in the message with the subject line:

    Unresolvable IP breaks host_accept_relay lookup
