I saw a few with exim-3.22 on FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT, but none on FreeBSD
4.3-RELEASE. Unfortunately, I no longer have a useful 5.0-CURRENT test
system. The compiler used to build the troublesome exim was the one
currently in the 5.0-CURRENT tree. I'm not sure whether that's the same
as the one used in 4.3-RELEASE, which is 2.95.3.

No interesting paniclogs associated with the orphaned data spool files.
