I think I've figured it out, but I haven't yet figured out "the right
way" to fix it.

I think it has to do with an "upgrade" that happened to our firewall.
It appears that one of the outside folk was able to send us mail a few
days before the upgrade, but not a few days after the upgrade. The
upgrade, at this point, appears to be the only change at either end that
occured between the last successful send and the first unsuccessful one.

An obvious temporary fix would be to backout the upgrade but it's
clearly not the long term solution.
