For the record, the reasons for not linking c-client were:

. I was bolting this into existing code that was not written with
c-client in mind.

. c-client is a large library.

. I certainly didn't want to use c-client for other delivery formats -
for all sorts of reasons, some of which are made in the Courier
document (the point about the multiple levels of interface).

. At the time, we were considering using MBX format *without* MBX
locking on one of our central systems. This would give the speed
advantage over mbox but without the shared access. In the event, we
decided not to do this, but by then I'd done the work.
