I don't look on it as flattery, nor as pressure. For me, pre-ordering
is a way to give Philip money without having to deal with the hassles
of:

  (1) Writing him a check in US funds from a US bank which would then
      be nearly useless to him when he wants to deposit UK funds into a
      UK bank;

  (2) Purchasing a plane ticket to fly to the UK in order to buy Philip
      a (suddenly very expensive) lager or ale or whatnot; or

  (3) Trying to ship something of actual more-than-sentimental value to
      Philip only to have it confiscated by some customs official who
      "always wanted one of those things".

It's a way of sending thanks and support in an effective, affordable,
low-pressure, and unobtrusive way.

And i get a cool picture of a whatever-that-thing-was on the cover as
well.

It's like buying the User Friendly books---i've already read all the
comics, but hell, Illiad seems like a nice guy and i like his work.
Same thing with Philip.
