If by "routed via smtp" you mean "delivered by SMTP", I can't see how
that can be relevant. Arrival and logging happens well before any
delivery is even contemplated.

Since I'm unable to reproduce the problem, I can't do much other than
suggest things for you to try. I guess you have to run your -bS runs
with -d9 set, and save the debugging output (on stderr) somewhere so
that you can refer to it when a message is not logged.
