Demon did once set MX records to point to hosts that were only
intermittently connected - but my memory is that it happened only for
a short period of time and they saw the light. (It's certainly not
happened in the last 6 years, but would have been in the 93-94
timeframe.)
I'm all for not having unnecessary backup MX's (a former PIPEX
postmaster wrote a very good document on that aspect) but I consider
it a bad form to expect the sender to spend more CPU and time than
necessary in delivering mail.
